"1,000 Eco-Friendly Patents Last Year"…Hyundai Mobis Publishes '2021 Sustainability Report'
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Among the approximately 2,100 global intellectual property rights acquired by Hyundai Mobis last year, about half were in the eco-friendly sector.
On the 18th, Hyundai Mobis announced that it had published the '2021 Sustainability Report,' which includes patents related to eco-friendly mobility, the status of international certifications for eco-friendly management, and future plans.
This year, the mid- to long-term eco-friendly management strategy and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management initiatives were detailed to meet the requirements of various global ESG information guidelines, such as the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommended indicators and the World Economic Forum (WEF) International Business Council ESG indicators.
In the sustainability report, Hyundai Mobis President Seonghwan Cho stated, "We are preparing a new transformation to lead the market with new standards and strategies suitable for the New Normal era and to enhance the company's sustainability. We will actively practice eco-friendly management for future generations and the planet while increasing future value through new business expansion via new technology development."
Hyundai Mobis has a portfolio of core electrification components such as drive systems, controllers, battery systems, and hydrogen fuel cells, and is developing future electrification core technologies including in-wheel motors, drive modules, hydrogen fuel cell cells, and battery system software. In this process, Hyundai Mobis secured about 2,100 related patents, with approximately 1,000, or about half, related to eco-friendly technologies.
Hyundai Mobis explained that it will advance eco-friendly vehicle systems to realize Clean Mobility and will be the first domestic automotive parts company to pursue membership in RE100. RE100 is a global campaign aiming to switch 100% of the electricity used by companies to renewable energy.
Hyundai Mobis has assessed energy usage across all business sites, including domestic and overseas production plants, research institutes, quality centers, and subsidiaries, and established a roadmap for RE100 implementation through review of regulations and social environments in each country. Through this, Hyundai Mobis plans to achieve 100% renewable energy use at all domestic and overseas business sites by 2040, ten years ahead of the RE100 standard.
Currently, Hyundai Mobis has obtained environmental energy management system certification (ISO14001) for domestic and overseas business sites and participates in global initiatives such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
Along with eco-friendly management, Hyundai Mobis also emphasizes safety management. As part of this, it has acquired ISO45001 (International Safety and Health Management System certification) at over 90% of its domestic and overseas business sites.
Hyundai Mobis also implements various policies to enhance the competitiveness and risk management of its partners. When signing contracts with partners, it encourages the non-use of hazardous substances, compliance with environmental regulations, safety management, and the transition to eco-friendly systems throughout the product manufacturing process.
Moreover, since last year, Hyundai Mobis has been conducting joint 'Supply Chain ESG Sustainability Risk' assessments with its partners to strengthen their ESG management capabilities.
