[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongnam Province, applied for the ‘2021 Safe and Beautiful Small Stream Maintenance Contest’ hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and received an Excellence Award.
They were awarded a commendation from the Minister of the Interior and Safety for ‘Bongducheon where People and Nature Coexist’ and will receive additional national funding incentives for disaster prevention projects in 2022.
From 2019 to 2020, the county invested a total project cost of 2.776 billion KRW to maintain 1.17 km of the unmanaged small stream Bongdu in Ilwon, Sambamyeon, including bank stabilization, reconstruction of six bridges, and creation of a multipurpose plaza.
In particular, the narrow stream width was expanded to prevent disasters caused by insufficient flow cross-section, and a nature-friendly stream maintenance was carried out to provide waterfront spaces, enhancing residents’ convenience.
The project received high praise for establishing a foundation for creating beautiful streams through resident-participatory stream environment maintenance.
The contest has been held nationwide since 2010 by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to ensure that small stream maintenance projects not only serve their original purpose of flood defense but also become nature-friendly projects that preserve the inherent beauty of streams as spaces for rest and culture.
