Ministry of Environment Announces Public Waste Resource Management Facility Site Candidates... Up to 60% of Operating Profits to Be Distributed
Nationwide Event, Running for 60 Days Until September 13
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The Ministry of Environment and the Korea Environment Corporation announced on the 13th that they will open a 60-day public contest starting from the 15th to select candidate sites for public waste resource management facilities.
Public waste resource management facilities are waste treatment facilities installed and operated by the government to promptly and environmentally process illegal and disaster waste, protect public health and property, and support local residents. The Ministry of Environment is promoting the installation and operation of public waste resource management facilities by region nationwide.
This call for candidate sites will be conducted by the Korea Environment Corporation, which has been designated and announced as the institution responsible for installing and operating public waste resource management facilities.
Public waste resource management facilities will be complex facilities consisting of incineration facilities (200 tons/day), landfill facilities (2 million cubic meters), and recycling facilities to stably process public treatment target wastes such as abandoned or improperly treated waste and disaster waste.
Regions wishing to attract public waste resource management facilities must submit an application form and required documents to the Korea Environment Corporation during the contest period.
The desired installation site must be at least 200,000 square meters in area and must not correspond to karst terrain formed by the dissolution or sedimentation of limestone by carbonic acid in water. Additionally, it must not be restricted by relevant laws and regulations, such as water source protection zones, for the installation of waste treatment facilities.
Candidate sites will be finalized after document review and on-site investigation of the applying regions. Subsequently, the site will be selected by a site selection committee consisting of resident representatives living in the candidate site, local council members, and experts.
The region selected as the site for the public waste resource management facility will receive up to 60% of the operating profits. Residents living within 2 km of the facility site (fund beneficiary area) will receive 10% of the operating profits, and residents who invested in the installation of the public waste resource management facility will receive 10% of the operating profits in cash or in-kind. Local governments and installation and operation institutions will carry out resident welfare projects and install resident benefit facilities within 40% of the operating profits.
