[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Lee Dong-jin, Mayor of Dobong-gu, stepped down after successfully completing his one-year term as the Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council of District Mayors.
On the morning of the 9th, at 9 a.m., Lee chaired the 161st regular meeting of the Seoul Metropolitan Council of District Mayors via video conference, reviewing matters related to the 2021 Seoul Metropolitan Government-District Welfare Grand Agreement, including elementary school enrollment congratulatory payments and veterans’ honor allowances. The council also elected new executives for the 4th year of the 7th elected term.
With this meeting, the one-year terms of the 3rd year executives of the 7th elected term, including Chairperson Lee Dong-jin, Secretary-General Kim Soo-young (Mayor of Yangcheon-gu), and Auditor Jung Won-oh (Mayor of Seongdong-gu), came to an end. The 4th year of the 7th elected term will be led by Lee Sung, Mayor of Guro-gu.
Chairperson Lee presided over his final meeting, stating, “Looking back, the past year as Chairperson was truly eventful. Amid the COVID-19 situation, the vacancy of the Seoul Mayor’s office, and the inauguration of Mayor Oh Se-hoon, the role of Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council of District Mayors felt very heavy.”
He added, “However, my tenure as Chairperson was a precious time to discuss Seoul city administration and social issues with the twenty-four district mayors beyond the regional limits of Dobong-gu.”
Meanwhile, Chairperson Lee is recognized for elevating the council to a higher level of solidarity and cooperation through his characteristic calmness amid movement (靜中動) and sharp political judgment, even during the unprecedented crises of COVID-19 and the vacancy of the Seoul Mayor’s office.
During the 3rd year of the 7th elected term, the Seoul Metropolitan Council of District Mayors achieved significant outcomes in Seoul city administration and public welfare issues, including ▲ urging the redefinition of administrative authority for Seoul-city and district mutual cooperation ▲ issuing a statement on the vacancy of Mayor Park Won-soon’s office ▲ appealing for the cancellation of the large-scale August 15 Seoul rally ▲ expanding the ‘Free Public Wi-Fi (S-net) Project’ to guarantee communication rights ▲ urging amendments to the Restriction of Special Taxation Act to revitalize the Good Landlord Project ▲ operating a task force for the Seoul city-district welfare grand agreement ▲ forming a task force for village bus development and system improvement and submitting proposals to Seoul city ▲ urging institutional improvements related to the Serious Accident Punishment Act and child abuse prevention and district responses ▲ providing cooperative disaster relief funds between districts and Seoul city ▲ designating ESG financial institutions and proposing measures to realize ‘carbon neutrality by 2050.’
Chairperson Lee stated that during the remaining term of the 7th elected term, he will focus on his primary duties as Mayor of Dobong-gu, including the creation of the Chang-dong New Economic Center, and will faithfully perform his roles as Chairperson of the Local Autonomy and Decentralization Government Council and Chairperson of the Korean Human Rights Cities Council.
