Gwangju Bukbu Fire Station Operates 'Heatwave Emergency Squad' to Prepare for Summer Heat-Related Illness Cases
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Bukbu Fire Station (Chief Kim Hee-cheol) announced on the 12th that it is operating a heatwave ambulance team in anticipation of heat-related illness patients due to the onset of the summer heatwave season.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the average temperature this summer is expected to be higher than usual by 40% in July and 50% in August, predicting that the number of heatwave days will be higher than last year.
Accordingly, Bukbu Fire Station has designated and is operating eight ambulances and six reserve pump ambulances as heatwave ambulance teams.
To prepare for heat-related illness dispatches, the emergency medical technicians’ heatwave-related first aid skills and medical guidance and consultation at the ambulance situation management center are also being strengthened.
Jo Jong-hoon, head of the 119 Disaster Response Division, said, “We will do our best to protect the safety and health of citizens by operating the heatwave ambulance team,” and added, “We hope everyone can have a safe summer by following safety rules during heatwaves.”

Meanwhile, the action guidelines during heatwaves are ▲ to refrain from outdoor activities as much as possible, and if going out is necessary, wear a wide-brimmed hat and light clothing and always carry a water bottle ▲ never leave elderly or children alone in a car with closed windows ▲ always follow heatwave safety rules (water, shade, rest) at outdoor workplaces, actively implement the ‘heat rest time system’ during vulnerable hours (2 to 5 p.m.) ▲ if outside or if there is no air conditioner at home, move to a nearby heatwave shelter during the hottest time to avoid the heat.
