The Corruption Investigation Office formally files charges against 'Sponsor Prosecutor' Kim Hyung-jun for bribery and launches investigation
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (Gong-su-cheo) is directly investigating bribery charges against former Chief Prosecutor Kim Hyung-jun, who is infamously known as the so-called 'sponsor prosecutor.'
According to the legal community on the 12th, Gong-su-cheo officially registered former Chief Prosecutor Kim on the 6th on charges of accepting bribes under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
The case involving former Chief Prosecutor Kim was previously transferred to Gong-su-cheo by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office in mid-last month. Kim is accused of receiving 40 million won in three installments from his former prosecutorial colleague, lawyer Park, between March and September 2016, in exchange for covering up Park's criminal charges. Gong-su-cheo has also registered lawyer Park as a suspect.
Gong-su-cheo is expected to first conduct a complainant investigation against Kim, the sponsor, and also summon former Chief Prosecutor Kim and lawyer Park.
Previously, in October 2016, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office arrested and indicted former Chief Prosecutor Kim on charges of receiving hospitality over several years from sponsor Kim, a middle and high school classmate, in exchange for investigative favors, but concluded that the bribery charges were unfounded.
However, sponsor Kim filed a complaint with the police in October 2019, demanding punishment for former Chief Prosecutor Kim. The police assigned the case to the Serious Crime Investigation Division of the National Police Agency and, after investigation, sent both suspects to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office with a prosecution recommendation at the end of last October.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office held the case for about eight months before transferring it to Gong-su-cheo. After review, Gong-su-cheo decided to investigate the case directly and notified Kim's side of this decision.
