Gyeongbuk Province and Gumi City announced on the 6th that they signed a memorandum of understanding for investment to create a hydrogen fuel cell power generation complex in the Gumi High-Tech Valley industrial complex.
The event was attended by Ha Dae-sung, Deputy Governor for Economy of Gyeongbuk Province; Jang Se-yong, Mayor of Gumi; Kang Seung-gon, CEO of VT GMP; Kim Hak-bong, President of KJ Green Energy; Song Jae-seop, Vice President of Korea Western Power; Jeong Sang-gi, CEO and Vice Chairman of Mirae Asset Energy Infrastructure Asset Management; and Lee Wang-jae, Head of Hydrogen Business Promotion Team at SK Eco Plant.
The Gumi hydrogen fuel cell power generation complex is a mammoth energy project with a total budget of 601.5 billion KRW.
A 90MW-class power plant will be built on a 5,000-pyeong site within the National 5 Complex High-Tech Valley Industrial Complex and operated for 20 years. The annual electricity production is 750GW, enough to supply power to approximately 250,000 households based on a four-person family.
This project is expected to serve as a stepping stone for attracting future advanced industries to the Gumi National Industrial Complex by preventing power supply shortages through the establishment of a stable power infrastructure.
Hydrogen fuel cells are a representative eco-friendly renewable energy business that produces electricity by separating hydrogen from natural gas (LNG) and reacting it with oxygen collected from the air.
They have high power generation efficiency and produce no exhaust, and clean energy production facilities have been safely operated in urban areas such as Mapo in Seoul and Lotte World Tower in Jamsil.
Unlike solar or wind power, hydrogen fuel cells have the advantage of producing electricity regardless of time or natural environmental conditions.
Approximately 9 billion KRW in special support funds and an annual basic support fund of 30 million KRW will be provided to the areas near the power plant.
Ha Dae-sung, Deputy Governor for Economy of Gyeongsangbuk-do, said, “We hope that the establishment of the hydrogen fuel cell power plant will build a stable power supply system and lead to continued investment in future advanced industries within the Gumi National Industrial Complex.”
