US military bases attacked amid difficulties in Iran nuclear deal negotiations
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] An armed drone infiltrated the airspace above the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, and was shot down by U.S. forces. The drone attack is suspected to have been carried out by pro-Iranian Shiite militias in Iraq. As the restoration talks for the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA - Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) face difficulties, U.S. military bases across the Middle East, including Iraq, have reportedly been targeted.
According to foreign media such as AFP on the 5th (local time), an armed drone carrying explosives infiltrated the airspace above the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, and was shot down by U.S. forces. AFP cited Iraqi sources reporting that on the same day, three rocket-propelled grenades were fired toward an Iraqi Air Force base in the western desert of Iraq where U.S. troops are stationed.
Since early this year, attacks on U.S.-related facilities in Iraq have increased, with 47 incidents reported. The U.S. forces stationed in Iraq suspect that Iraqi militias supported by Iran, the leading Shiite power in Islam, have been conducting drone attacks. Currently, about 2,500 U.S. troops are stationed in Iraq, and on the 27th of last month, they carried out retaliatory airstrikes on two pro-Iran militia bases near the Iraq-Syria border.
