View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim So-young] In connection with the case of a high school student in Gwangju who made an extreme choice in a mountain, a video revealing testimonies that the student had suffered from school violence during their lifetime was released the day before the funeral.
According to the Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju on the 5th, at around 11:19 a.m. on the 29th of last month, high school student A (18) took his own life near the octagonal pavilion on Eodeungsan Mountain in Gwangju. When rescuers arrived at the scene following a hiker's report, A was already deceased. The police concluded that there were no external injuries on A’s body and no signs of homicide or other criminal suspicion, leaning toward closing the case.
However, the night before the funeral, A’s parents received shocking information from the parents of A’s friend who had come to the funeral hall. A video showing A being subjected to violence by friends was revealed. The video, released by MBN on the 5th, clearly shows B strangling A until he loses consciousness.
Estimated to have been recorded about a year ago, in the video B tells the surrounding friends, "Let me know if (A) faints," while strangling A until he loses consciousness. When A passes out, B shows a bright smile revealing his teeth, and the friends around him laugh along.

A’s family said, "A parent came to meet us and showed us the video," adding, "We heard that one of the kids who was strangling him was supposed to carry the coffin tomorrow, so they came thinking they had to stop it."
They continued, "We also learned that A was slapped the day before he died," and added, "The student in the video who was the perpetrator said that since A had a strong constitution, he told others to try hitting him."
Meanwhile, A’s suicide note reportedly contained many references to academic stress but also included expressions of gratitude to some friends for stopping severe pranks.
The police have transferred the case from the existing criminal division to the Women and Juvenile Division to investigate the facts related to school violence. On the 7th, the police plan to conduct a full investigation and witness interviews targeting school officials and suspected perpetrators to verify the allegations made by the bereaved family.
