Meanwhile, Jongno-gu, the representative district of traditional culture in Korea, has been steadily working to revitalize Korean culture since the 5th local government term. It is promoting various projects to break away from the old and stale image of traditional culture, emphasizing that it can be enjoyable and fresh, and strengthening the self-sustainability of Korean culture.
Since 2013, Jongno-gu has been practicing wearing Hanbok by operating a monthly ‘Staff Hanbok Wearing Day,’ and since 2016, it has been leading efforts to widely promote the beauty of Hanbok through the ‘Jongno Hanbok Festival.’ The festival, which embodies Jongno-gu’s efforts to lead Han culture content, was selected as a nurturing festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2018.
To promote Hanbok revitalization policies, the ‘Gopda Hanbok Experience Center’ was opened in 2017, offering Hanbok repair programs and education on wearing traditional clothing properly. In 2018 and 2019, ‘Proper Wearing of Our Clothes, Hanbok Forums’ were held to raise public interest in Hanbok.
This year, the traditional cultural space Mugyewon hosted the ‘Hanbok Upcycling Art Exhibition’ and the ‘Jongno Hanbok Talk Concert’ commemorating the 2021 Spring Hanbok Culture Week designated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, both receiving positive responses.
The talk concert, themed ‘Hanbok, Coexistence,’ was designed as a serious and enjoyable discussion aiming for the normalization of traditional clothing in daily life, discussing an integrated direction considering the authenticity and popularity of Hanbok.
Notably, actress and singer Jeon Hyo-sung appeared, attracting significant attention.
