According to Sancheong Elementary School and Sancheong County Sports Council on the 2nd, at the 75th National Ssireum Championship held from the 23rd to the 30th of last month in Inje County, Gangwon Province, the Sancheong Elementary School Ssireum team advanced to the semifinals in the elementary school team event and won the bronze medal.
Hwang Il-woo, coach of the Sancheong Elementary School Ssireum team, said, "The 3rd place finish in the team event at this competition is promising for the future, considering that most of the core players are 5th graders who have only been practicing Ssireum for three months."
Cheon Jong-moon, head teacher of the Ssireum team, stated, "We hope to prepare well for the 50th National Youth Sports Festival to be held in Jeonbuk from July 14 to 16 and achieve good results."
Founded in 2002, the Sancheong Elementary School Ssireum team, led by coach Hwang Il-woo, consists of 12 registered student athletes with the Korea Ssireum Association: eight 5th graders and three 6th graders, all working hard.
The team has established itself as a prestigious Ssireum team by achieving significant results such as winning the team event at the 4th Chuncheon Soyanggang Cup Ssireum Tournament in 2018, two bronze medals at the 2018 National Youth Sports Festival, two bronze medals at the 2017 National Youth Sports Festival, and one gold and one silver medal at the 2014 National Youth Sports Festival.
Sancheong Elementary School is also home to former champions who dominated the Ssireum world, including Lee Ki-soo from Chahwang, who won the Halla Jangsa title six times, Kim Sam-sik, a two-time Geumgang Jangsa titleholder, and Kim Chil-gyu from Danseong, the 17th Cheonha Jangsa.

The National Ssireum Championship, hosted by the Korea Ssireum Association, is a traditional Ssireum competition that determines the strongest wrestler on the sand ring. This year, about 1,300 players from across the country participated and competed from the 23rd to the 30th.
