This signifies that all national telecommunications operators have joined forces to build nationwide infrastructure.
The three carriers, including KT, announced that they achieved this result at the 'Global Mobile (Glomo) Awards 2021' held online on March 30 (local time) during the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the world's largest mobile and telecommunications exhibition in Barcelona, Spain.
Organized by the GSM Association (GSMA), the Glomo Awards are globally recognized honors in the ICT field, celebrating their 26th edition this year. They select companies and services that have achieved innovation and success across the mobile industry.
The Ministry of Science and ICT, the three carriers, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) reviewed investment plans, technical implementation methods, and operational plans for 5G in rural areas over six months starting from September last year to enhance user convenience. Based on this, they announced the rural 5G shared use plan in April this year and signed a business agreement for cooperation on rural area shared use among the three carriers.
In the telecommunications industry, rural 5G shared use is the world's first and largest cooperation model where the government and all telecommunications companies participate to build a wireless network. It has attracted global attention as all national wireless telecommunications operators participate to promote nationwide 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) sharing.
The 'Rural 5G Shared Use' project, jointly promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the three carriers, will be provided without discrimination not only to subscribers of the three carriers but also to MVNO subscribers and global roaming subscribers.
