Over 42,000 Residents of Uichang-gu, Changwon City, Transition to Seongsan-gu Residents
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] The administrative districts of Uichang-gu and Seongsan-gu in Changwon-si, Gyeongnam will change partially for the first time in 30 years starting July 1.
Changwon City announced on the 30th that it will implement an administrative district boundary adjustment from July 1, incorporating several dongs (neighborhoods) of Uichang-gu into Seongsan-gu.
The previously complex boundary between Seongsan-gu and Uichang-gu, which was based on past National Assembly electoral districts, has been simplified using Changwoncheon Stream and Changidae-ro as the criteria.
The legal dongs belonging to Uichang-gu?Toechon-dong (administrative dong Bongnim-dong), Daewon-dong, Dudae-dong, Samdong-dong, Deokjeong-dong (all administrative dong Palyong-dong), Yongji-dong, Yongho-dong, Sinwol-dong, and Bansong-dong (all administrative dong Yongji-dong)?will become part of Seongsan-gu starting July 1.
Based on administrative dongs, Toechon-dong will be under Bansong-dong of Seongsan-gu; Daewon-dong, Dudae-dong, Samdong-dong, and Deokjeong-dong will be under Jungang-dong of Seongsan-gu; and Yongji-dong, Yongho-dong, Sinwol-dong, and Bansong-dong will be under Yongji-dong of Seongsan-gu.
Due to the administrative district adjustment, approximately 42,000 residents of Uichang-gu will become residents of Seongsan-gu.
Major public institutions will also be affected by the boundary adjustment.
Government offices such as Changwon City Hall, Gyeongnam Provincial Office of Education, Gyeongnam Regional Military Manpower Administration, Gyeongnam Election Commission, Changwon Jungbu Police Station, Changwon Tax Office, and Changwon Employment and Labor Office will have their addresses changed to Seongsan-gu.
The Changwon Convention Center (SECO) and Yongho-dong Garosu-gil, known for its many popular restaurants, will also change from Uichang-gu to Seongsan-gu.
Gyeongnam Provincial Government Office will remain in Uichang-gu.
However, the city emphasized that only the responsible district will change, while detailed addresses such as postal codes, lot numbers, and road names will remain the same.
The city explained that the administrative districts of Uichang-gu and Seongsan-gu were reorganized for the first time in 30 years to resolve inconveniences caused by the mismatch between actual living areas and administrative districts.
Previously, due to population growth, the single National Assembly electoral district was divided into Gap (Changwon Uichang) and Eul (Changwon Seongsan) districts in 1991.
At that time, during the electoral district delineation by politicians, Bansong-dong was incorporated into the Eul electoral district in a protruding form toward the Gap electoral district side due to political interests.

When Changwon, Masan, and Jinhae merged in 2010 to form the unified Changwon City with five administrative districts, the administrative districts of Seongsan-gu and Uichang-gu were determined based on the National Assembly electoral districts, resulting in an abnormal system where actual living areas and administrative districts did not match, which lasted for 30 years.
