16 New Vaccine Adverse Reactions Recognized as Causally Related... Cumulative Total 92 Cases
145 Cases Reviewed at the 19th Damage Investigation Team Meeting, 16 Anaphylaxis Cases 'Causality Recognized'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] The COVID-19 Vaccination Damage Investigation Team reviewed a total of 145 new cases of death, severe symptoms, and suspected anaphylaxis, and recognized causality with the vaccine in 16 cases of anaphylaxis. The team deferred judgment on 1 death and 3 severe cases, while the rest were not recognized as causally related.
The investigation team held its 19th meeting on the 25th and reviewed 42 death cases, 59 severe cases, and 44 suspected anaphylaxis cases, the team announced on the 28th.
The average age of the 42 new death cases was 79.7 years (range 52?94 years). Among them, 41 people, accounting for 97.6%, had underlying conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and dementia. The vaccines administered were Pfizer for 30 people and AstraZeneca for 12 people. After comprehensively reviewing the estimated causes of death, including the influence of underlying diseases and vaccination, 41 cases were evaluated as difficult to recognize causality between vaccination and death. One deferred case will be re-discussed after supplementing additional data. The investigation team explained, "The majority of the estimated causes of death, such as acute myocardial infarction, sudden cardiac death, and sepsis, were more likely caused by underlying diseases and old age rather than vaccination, so causality was not recognized."
The average age of the 59 new severe cases was 76.2 years (range 23?94 years). Among them, 56 had underlying conditions. The average time from vaccination to symptom onset was 7 days, and the vaccines administered were Pfizer for 43 people, AstraZeneca for 15 people, and Janssen for 1 person. For 56 cases, it was evaluated as difficult to recognize causality between COVID-19 vaccination and the respective diseases. Three deferred cases will be re-discussed after supplementing additional data such as medical records.
Among the 44 new suspected anaphylaxis cases, causality was recognized in 16 cases.
The investigation team has held a total of 19 meetings so far, reviewing 563 death and severe cases (266 deaths, 297 severe cases) and 274 suspected anaphylaxis cases. As a result, causality with vaccination was recognized in 92 cases (1 death, 3 severe, 88 anaphylaxis) among all reviewed cases.

Lee Sang-won, head of the Epidemiological Investigation and Analysis Division at the Central Disease Control Headquarters, said, "After vaccination with adenovirus vector-based vaccines such as AstraZeneca and Janssen, symptoms suspected of thrombocytopenic thrombosis may appear between 4 days and 4 weeks." He added, "In such cases, patients should immediately seek medical care, and medical institutions treating these patients should promptly report adverse reactions."
