Jeju Coast Guard Rescues 12 Including Anglers Stranded on Uninhabited Island
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters] Reporter Hwang Jeong-pil= On the evening of the 26th, a fishing boat ran aground on the uninhabited island of Hwado in Jeju City, leaving the captain and 12 fishing passengers stranded on the rocky shore, but they were safely rescued by the Jeju Coast Guard, which dispatched an emergency response.
According to the Jeju Maritime Police Station on the 27th, at around 6:16 PM the previous day, a V-PASS SOS distress signal was received from vessel A (registered in Aewol/6.67t/captain 1, fishing passengers 11), which had departed from Aewol Port in Jeju City with 12 fishing passengers and was fishing near Hwado, Chuja-myeon.
Upon receiving the report, the Jeju Coast Guard immediately dispatched patrol vessels, rescue teams, and coastal rescue boats that were on duty in the nearby waters at around 6:17 PM. They urgently landed on the uninhabited island of Hwado and rescued all 12 stranded individuals, including the captain and fishing passengers, from the sinking vessel A.
During the operation, the Coast Guard used a high-speed rigid inflatable boat to safely board the captain and fishing passengers stranded on the rocky shore onto the patrol vessel, arriving at Jeju Port at around 8:15 PM. All passengers were in good health and returned home safely.
The grounded fishing boat A was secured to the rocky shore of Hwado using bow and stern mooring lines, but currently only part of the bow and the antenna are visible as the vessel has sunk. The captain of vessel A plans to arrange for salvage operations with private fishing boats and others.
Vessel A was carrying 200 liters of diesel fuel, but no marine pollution occurred.
The Coast Guard is conducting surveillance activities at the site using the Jeju Coast Guard pollution control vessel in preparation for any possible marine pollution.
Meanwhile, the Jeju Coast Guard confirmed that no one on the accident vessel was intoxicated, and plans to investigate the circumstances of the accident once the psychological state of the captain (50 years old, male, Jeju) and the fishing passengers (10 from Jeju, 1 from Gyeonggi) stabilizes.
