LG Uplus to Build Intelligent Transportation System Worth 45 Billion KRW in Gangneung
450 Billion KRW Investment by September Next Year... Support for Hosting ITS World Congress in Gangneung
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] LG Uplus announced on the 27th that its consortium was selected as the contractor for the Gangneung City Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure project, completed technical negotiations, and signed the main contract.
Intelligent Transportation Systems utilize Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance the safety, mobility, and efficiency of transportation systems. Gangneung City initiated this project to address issues such as increased traffic congestion and illegal parking following the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. LG Uplus explained that this project, with a total budget of 45 billion KRW to be invested by September next year, is the largest ITS project in South Korea to date. The consortium includes companies such as LG Uplus, Estrafic, Tracom, and Nzero.
Through this project, Gangneung City plans to provide intelligent transportation services on major city roads, including smart intersections, emergency priority signals, smart crosswalks, and roundabout entry support systems. To this end, a traffic center platform will be established, and further plans include building an autonomous driving testbed based on high-precision maps in Gangneung. The project will also be linked with Gangneung City's ongoing Smart City Challenge (MaaS - Mobility as a Service) to contribute to providing metropolitan-level transportation convenience.
LG Uplus has also committed to actively cooperating with Gangneung City in hosting the 2026 ITS World Congress, known as the World Transportation Olympics. Kang Jong-oh, Head of LG Uplus Smart City Business (Executive Director), said, "We expect that LG Uplus's communication infrastructure and ICT will significantly upgrade the lives of Gangneung citizens."
