[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Yasuhiko Nishimura, Minister of the Imperial Household Agency responsible for the Japanese Imperial Family, revealed on the 24th that Emperor Naruhito (德仁) is likely concerned about the spread of COVID-19 due to the Tokyo Olympics being held.
According to Kyodo News, Minister Nishimura said at a regular press conference that regarding the Emperor's perception of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, "His Majesty is very worried about the current COVID-19 situation," and "It is presumed that he is concerned that holding the event might lead to the spread of infections."
In other words, Minister Nishimura guessed that Emperor Naruhito is worried that COVID-19 might spread as a result of the Olympics.
It is known that Emperor Naruhito will serve as the honorary president of both the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Kyodo News also reported that there is consideration for the Emperor to attend the opening ceremony and declare the opening.
