With the increase in enjoying video content at home due to the impact of COVID-19, soundbars have gained attention alongside TVs. Moving beyond the era of ‘mono sound,’ where sound was limited to one direction, to the era of ‘multichannel,’ where sounds from various directions fill the space, Samsung Electronics introduced last month the premium soundbars HW-Q950A and HW-Q900A that fill the ‘gaps in space.’
Oh Minkyo, a product planner in Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business Division, explained in an interview released on the 23rd at Samsung Electronics Newsroom, "This time, rear surround speakers have been added to reflect sound off the side walls of the space where the user is located."
The 2021 model HW-Q950A added two rear surround channels, equipping it with an 11.1.4 channel setup. With the number of channels increasing up to 16, sound now penetrates even previously empty spaces. Five years ago, in 2016, Samsung Electronics first introduced a 5.1.4 channel soundbar, and last year unveiled a 9.1.4 channel soundbar. By increasing the number of channels, they have focused on filling empty spaces with sound.
The soundbar development team paid close attention to rendering technology, which delivers the sound as intended by the original creator, and waveguide technology, which outputs sound through the design of internal speaker structures. Choi Saehye, a marketing professional in the Visual Display Business Division, said, "It is meticulously designed to deliver sound at the most appropriate angles, from sound pouring down from the ceiling to sound reflecting off the walls." Park Haegwang, a Sound Lab professional, emphasized, "Since world-class experts from the Visual Display Business Division’s Sound Lab and Samsung Research America (SRA) Audio Lab located in Valencia, California, collaborated to design the inside of the speakers, it has a structure capable of producing world-class sound."
