[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) held the ‘29th Gwanak Resident Awards’ ceremony and presented plaques to the winners in seven categories.
Celebrating its 29th year this year, the ‘Gwanak Resident Awards’ is a representative event commemorating Gwanak Residents' Day. Each year, one individual (or organization) is selected as a winner in seven categories?filial piety, welfare, volunteerism, education, culture & arts, environment, and safety?recognizing residents who practice love for their community and neighbors.
This year’s event was scaled down and conducted as a ‘visiting awards ceremony’ for the second consecutive year in accordance with COVID-19 social distancing guidelines.
From February 26 to April 14, over 48 days, individuals and organizations active in various fields were nominated by residents, local organizations, and schools. After a rigorous review by the Gwanak Resident Awards Public Review Committee on May 24, seven winners (individuals or organizations) were finally selected.
First, in the filial piety category, Mr. Jang Seokgi (84), president of the Gwanak branch of the Korea Senior Citizens Association, contributed to spreading a culture of respect for elders and filial piety in the local community.
In the welfare category, the awardee Tandy, a handmade shoe SME, has led efforts to realize a welfare community by supporting low-income residents, sponsoring overseas language study programs for local high school students, and preventing solitary deaths among middle-aged single-person households.
In the volunteerism category, Mr. Jeong Yongpil (63), chairman of the Gwanak-gu Council for the Movement for Right Living, has continued various volunteer activities to cultivate advanced civic consciousness and neighborly love, including campaigns to maintain basic order, COVID-19 prevention and quarantine activities, green living practice rallies, and hosting senior citizen consolation events.
The education category winner, Ms. Lee Hyunjung (44, female), has actively supported educational development in the community by fostering voluntary parental participation in school education activities through her involvement in the Nanwoo Middle School Parent Association and promoting education activities in collaboration with the local community.
In the culture & arts category, Mr. Cho Kyunghoon (38) contributed to revitalizing culture and arts in Gwanak-gu by creating cultural and artistic spaces in the exam village and providing professional art education to aspiring young artists.
The environment category winner, Ms. Ha Youngsoo (69, female), head of the Miseong-dong Autonomous Disaster Prevention Team, has worked to improve the local environment and residents’ convenience through regular COVID-19 disinfection activities at key facilities, participation in illegal dumping prevention events, safety patrols, and inspection of hazardous piled materials.
In the safety category, Mr. Park Byungin (71) took the lead in apprehending hit-and-run offenders and discovering accident victims. Since 2016, he has actively participated in Seoul city road management and maintenance volunteer activities, contributing to road traffic safety for residents.
