Gwangju Police Conduct 'Promotion and Guidance-Focused' Activities for One Month
Enforcement of Violations Such as Drunk Driving and Not Wearing Safety Helmets Starting from the 21st
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Since the revised Road Traffic Act, which strengthened the safety of personal mobility device drivers such as electric kickboards, was enforced on the 13th of last month, 12 traffic accidents have occurred in the Gwangju area over the past month, resulting in 14 injuries.
This is a significant increase compared to 3 accidents and 3 injuries during the same period last year.
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency on the 21st, the police have conducted promotional and guidance activities focused on establishing safe operation of personal mobility devices for one month following the enforcement of the revised Road Traffic Act.
A total of 794 violations of personal mobility device regulations were guided. The most frequent was not wearing a helmet with 452 cases (56.9%), followed by riding on sidewalks with 186 cases (23.4%), and exceeding passenger limits with 64 cases (8.1%).
Along with the increase in personal mobility device users, the number of traffic accidents has steadily increased over the past three years (15 cases in 2018, 18 cases in 2019, and 38 cases in 2020).
In particular, due to serious injuries caused by not wearing helmets recently, starting today, enforcement will be conducted against violations of traffic regulations related to personal mobility devices to prevent accidents and establish proper operation in compliance with traffic laws.
The enforcement will target traffic violations such as drunk driving, unlicensed driving, not wearing helmets, exceeding passenger limits, crossing the center line, and wrong-way driving, focusing on areas with high personal mobility device traffic and high risk of traffic accidents.
