Mayor Kim Chung-seop: "We Will Make a Happy Gimcheon" ... 3 Billion Won Invested to Create Fine Dust Blocking Forest
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Jucheol In] Gimcheon City, Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 19th that it will create fine dust blocking forests in idle lands along major residential roads and industrial complexes.
It has planned a two-year project from last year to this year to establish 4 hectares of blocking forests.
With a project budget of 3 billion KRW, trees excellent at absorbing fine dust, such as thorn bushes and Metasequoia, will be planted near the residential areas of Eomo Sangnam and Hanam villages and around the general industrial complex.
A fine dust blocking forest (1.5 hectares) will also be created near the Gyeongbu Expressway in Apo-eup and the Daeshin rest area.
According to research by the National Institute of Forest Science under the Korea Forest Service, one tree absorbs 35.7g of fine dust annually, and 47 trees are needed to absorb the amount of fine dust emitted annually by one diesel vehicle.
It was found that creating blocking forests reduces fine dust concentration by an average of 25.6% and ultrafine dust by an average of 40.9%.
Mayor Kim Choong-seop said, “We will continue to expand green infrastructure environments to provide citizens with a pleasant living environment and do our best to make Gimcheon a happy city.”
