"Announcing 6G Demonstration Plan to Launch 14 Low Earth Orbit Satellites by 2031"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The government plans to launch a total of 14 low Earth orbit communication satellites by 2031 in preparation for the 6G era.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) disclosed cooperation plans among related ministries for demonstrating hyperspace communication services through the "Satellite Communication Technology Development Strategy for Preparing the 6G Era," which was submitted to the Emergency Economic Central Countermeasures Headquarters meeting on the 18th.
First, MSIT plans to launch a total of 14 low Earth orbit communication satellites by 2031 in line with the standardization stages of ground-satellite integrated networks by international communication standardization organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3GPP. Additionally, in cooperation with related ministries, it will promote the demonstration of hyperspace communication services using a leading satellite communication network.
MSIT and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plan to utilize MSIT's low Earth orbit communication satellite pilot network for the demonstration of autonomous ship remote control systems and maritime traffic information services. Furthermore, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will link the communication service demonstration for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) with MSIT's low Earth orbit communication satellite pilot network. A government official stated, "Through this cooperation plan among related ministries, an opportunity has been created to demonstrate essential hyperspace communication services applicable to domestic urban air mobility operations using domestic technology."
Along with this, MSIT plans to actively promote satellite communication technology development and space verification history acquisition to expand the international satellite communication industry and foster the domestic satellite communication industry. According to Morgan Stanley, the global satellite industry is expected to grow from $365 billion in 2018 to $1.104 trillion by 2040. During the same period, the share of the satellite communication sector is estimated to expand from 15% to 53%.
