Mayor Oh Se-hoon Visits Hwanil High School to Present Mayor's Commendation
Mayor Oh: "Students' Instant Judgments Stem from What They Have Learned... Hope Exemplary Cases Are Widely Known"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Four high school students who saved the life of a citizen attempting to jump off Mapo Bridge, a chicken restaurant owner who generously gave free chicken to hungry brothers, and a nurse who performed CPR on a cardiac arrest passenger at a subway station on her way home all received commendations from the Mayor of Seoul.
On the 18th, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited Hwanil High School and selected four third-year high school students who saved a citizen's life as this year's first 'Righteous Citizens at Disaster Scenes,' awarding them mayoral commendations. Considering that they are third-year students preparing for exams, Mayor Oh visited the school personally to avoid disrupting their studies.
Mayor Oh said, "The students' split-second decisions at today's event come from what they have learned," adding, "I am grateful that the teachers have raised our students well and that they serve as role models in our society." He continued, "I hope these exemplary cases become widely known and that these talents grow into contributors to society."
The Hwanil High School students who saved the citizen attempting to jump witnessed a man precariously hanging on the railing of Mapo Bridge while taking a walk along the Han River on the 1st of last month. Despite the dangerous situation where the man could have fallen into the river, the students united with the determination to save him and managed to rescue the precious life.
The nurse who saved a life by providing emergency care to a cardiac arrest passenger also received the 'Righteous Citizen at Disaster Scenes' mayoral commendation. Nurse Kwon Young-sun of Seoul Red Cross Hospital found a passenger who had lost consciousness and collapsed on the platform at Gayang Station on the subway on May 11th during her commute home. Nurse Kwon performed CPR during the golden time before 119 arrived, enabling the patient to regain consciousness.
Additionally, Park Jae-hwi, who runs a chicken restaurant in Mapo, received a mayoral commendation for 'Meritorious Service in the Food Sector.' Park gave free chicken to brothers who desperately wanted to eat chicken but only had 5,000 won on hand. After their story became known, a nationwide wave of orders from citizens wanting to 'donjjul (money + punishment)' the owner emerged. Park also donated 6 million won, supplemented from his own pocket, to the Mapo District Office.
