[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Japanese government is planning to issue vaccine passports starting next month.
On the 17th, NHK reported, "Local governments responsible for vaccine administration plan to issue vaccine passports based on vaccination records from mid-next month."
The initial issuance targets are people who hold passports necessary for overseas travel. Foreigners residing in Japan are also expected to be able to use vaccine passports when visiting their home countries.
The paper-based vaccine passports will include information such as name, nationality, passport number, and vaccination dates. NHK stated, "The Japanese government is also considering issuing digital-format vaccine passports."
With the Tokyo Olympics opening on the 23rd of next month, the Japanese government is making every effort to increase vaccination rates. From that day, large-scale vaccination centers have significantly expanded the eligible age group from 65 and older to 18 and older.
