Ahn Cheol-soo: "Opposition Unity is the First Step to Save the Country... Principles Must Be Upheld"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, reaffirmed the principles of respect, party-to-party integration, and a centrist pragmatic approach regarding the merger with the People Power Party.
On the 15th, Ahn stated, "Discussions are currently underway regarding the integration of the People’s Party and the People Power Party," adding, "The People’s Party has emphasized the following three criteria and principles."
First, Ahn said, "We must approach this with an open and humble attitude, respecting and considering each other while keeping in mind the people's desire for a change of government." He added, "The People’s Party will not demand shares, and the People Power Party must demonstrate greater sacrifice and dedication by relinquishing more vested interests." He explained, "The people want integration not for the sake of integration itself, but for government change and the future of the Republic of Korea."
Ahn emphasized, "The principle of party-to-party integration must be upheld." He stated, "Expanding the opposition’s base to include centrists and rational progressives is essential to realize a ‘greater opposition unity.’ Through a chemical fusion between the two parties, we must unite our support bases completely so that more citizens will offer their encouragement and support."
Regarding the platform of the unified opposition party, he explained, "By placing a centrist pragmatic approach at the core of politics, the opposition must stand tall as the agent of change, innovation, and reform." He added, "Through this, we can assure the public that the change of government is not merely a judgment on the Moon Jae-in administration but a choice toward a better future."
