Jeonnam Province and Yeosu City Resolve to Fully Support Hosting COP28 in the South Coast and Southern Central Region
President Moon Declares South Korea's Bid for COP28, Discusses Active Efforts for Carbon Neutrality Implementation
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shim Kyung-taek] Jeonnam Province and Yeosu City made a full commitment to attracting COP28 to the South Coast Southern Central Region at the '4th Regular Meeting of the COP28 Attraction Committee' held on the 11th at the Yeosu World Expo Convention Center.
The meeting was attended by about 30 members of the COP28 Attraction Committee, including Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok, co-advisory chairmen Ryu Jung-gu and Cho Se-yoon, operations chairman Lee Sang-hoon, and executive chairman Jung Seok-man.
Since President Moon Jae-in officially declared South Korea's bid to host COP28 at the '2021 P4G Seoul Summit' on May 30, competition among domestic cities to attract the event has accelerated, leading to discussions on differentiated carbon neutrality implementation plans and promotional strategies to secure an advantage in the bid.
In particular, to spread the atmosphere for attracting COP28, local governments and public institutions such as education offices in the South Coast Southern Central Region are taking the lead in promoting the 'Reducing Single-Use Products Campaign.' The committee also held in-depth discussions on expanding the 'Carbon Hunter Activities' prioritized by the attraction committee, COP28 attraction signature campaigns and relay performances, and focused online and offline promotional plans.
COP28 will be held in November 2023, and the host country will be decided at the 26th meeting in Glasgow, UK, this coming November.

The 12 cities and counties jointly bidding for COP28 in the South Coast Southern Central Region include Jeonnam (Yeosu, Suncheon, Gwangyang, Goheung, Gurye, Boseong) and Gyeongnam (Jinju, Sacheon, Hadong, Namhae, Sancheong, Goseong), expected to become a symbolic model of East-West harmony and national balanced development.
