"If You're a Politician, You Must Have Presidential Dreams," Ha Tae-kyung to Announce Presidential Bid Next Week
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] Ha Tae-kyung, a member of the People Power Party, announced his intention to run for president on the 11th. However, he said he plans to make an official declaration of candidacy next week.
On the 11th, Ha appeared on CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show' and, when asked about rumors of his presidential bid, said, "I kept it very secret, but how did the media find out? I was planning to announce (my candidacy) next week, so it's a bit awkward to deny it," effectively acknowledging his intention to run for president.
He stated, "Anyone who is a politician probably has a dream of becoming president," adding, "I started seriously thinking about it during last year's general election. After being elected, I thought, 'I should see the world through the eyes of the president, view state affairs from the president's perspective, and consider how I would address various issues if I were the president.' I have maintained that attitude ever since."
Regarding the reason behind his decision to run for president, Ha said, "It's a bit burdensome to explain in detail," and added, "At least until this week, I feel it is the time for the party leader."
He continued, "The most important thing is that the conservatives must regain power this time, and for that to happen, the conservatives need to evolve somewhat," adding, "We need the courage of younger people, even if just a little."
When asked if the generational change wind blowing within the party influenced his presidential bid, Ha replied, "That is unrelated."
