Pohang City Holds 'Citizen's Day' to Commemorate 72nd Anniversary of City Promotion
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] On the 10th, Pohang City held the '2021 Pohang Citizens' Day Ceremony' at the Pohang Culture and Arts Center to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the city's elevation, with about 200 representatives of citizens from all walks of life in attendance.
The event was broadcast live through HCN Gyeongbuk Broadcasting to communicate with citizens who could not attend in person. The event was attended by Mayor Lee Kang-deok, City Council Chairman Jeong Hae-jong, National Assembly members Kim Jeong-jae and Kim Byeong-wook, as well as representatives of 72-year-olds, student representatives, members of the Disabled Association, various civic groups, and representatives from towns and townships.
At the special awards ceremony, a total of 12 meritorious individuals from 8 fields, including COVID-19 quarantine, culture and arts, and regional economic revitalization, who contributed to the development of city administration, were selected and honored.
Pohang City conveyed hope for a new leap forward through overcoming COVID-19, economic recovery, and stabilization of people's livelihoods via a congratulatory video from citizens, which deeply moved the audience by sharing video messages on why living in Pohang makes citizens happy.
Additionally, tenor Yoo Chae-hoon, leader of La Poem, the winner of Phantom Singer Season 3 from Pohang, and soprano Kim Ye-eun, active in the National Opera Company, drew great responses with their sophisticated stage manners and explosive vocal power.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, "Pohang is a city that led Korea's industrialization and modernization, and the power of the citizens is the power of Pohang," adding, "Let us gather wisdom and capabilities with the great spirit of the citizens to lead Pohang's development and greater leap forward."

Meanwhile, Pohang Citizens' Day was designated on June 12 in 2004 to commemorate the day Pohang Port first opened on June 12, 1962. This year, since the 12th falls on a weekend, the ceremony was held earlier.
