5G Convergence Service Testbeds in Pangyo, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Daegu
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The government is accelerating the activation of 5G by establishing a four-base testbed system in Pangyo, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Daegu to spread differentiated 5G convergence services that the public can experience.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the morning of the 10th that Vice Minister Kyung-sik Cho visited the 5G testbed located at the Pangyo Corporate Support Hub to inspect the site. This aims to create convergence services that the public can experience by generating differentiated value in 5G, and to build a competitive 5G industrial ecosystem by supporting the development of 5G convergence services for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Currently, in addition to Pangyo, the Ministry of Science and ICT is supporting the development of 5G terminals, equipment, and service technologies by establishing 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz 5G base stations and test facilities in Daejeon, Gwangju, and Daegu as bases. The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute manages Gwangju and Daegu, the Korea Information and Communications Technology Association manages Pangyo, and Daegu Technopark manages Daegu.
The testbeds conduct development, testing, and verification of terminals and services for small and medium manufacturers, helping them release higher-quality products through technical support and consulting before market launch. Additionally, by linking with organizations such as the Korea Information and Communications Technology Association, the testbeds have improved convenience by enabling certified testing and issuance of test reports in one place.
Considering the evolving 5G international standards, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to upgrade the testbeds based on 5G standalone mode (SA) in the second half of this year to support users in experimenting in an environment equivalent to a 5G commercial network.
On this day, companies such as Thirteen Floor, Team Grit, and Netcube Technology demonstrated their 5G-based services and introduced 5G equipment and services under development and verification using the testbeds. Thirteen Floor unveiled a platform-based metaverse solution usable in untact online education and meetings. Team Grit demonstrated a 5G real-time video processing robot applicable in various disaster sites.

Vice Minister Cho said, “5G is a key means to activate the data economy and a foundation that creates new industries through convergence with fields such as manufacturing, media, and automobiles. We will actively strive to ensure that the 5G convergence service testbeds serve as open testbeds for many universities, startups, and small and medium ventures, contributing to spreading new services and devices and revitalizing the 5G market.”
