"Embarrassed and Devastated" Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop Apologizes for Allegations of Misconduct by Close Aide
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, bowed his head regarding the fact that current and former secretaries are under police investigation for allegations of misconduct.
On the 8th, through a public apology to the citizens, Mayor Lee stated, “Everything is due to my lack of virtue, and I bear great responsibility for not properly managing the secretaries,” adding, “I have emphasized innovation and integrity as administrative values, so I feel ashamed and devastated that such an incident has occurred.”
He continued, “I am truly sorry to our employees who have been working tirelessly day and night dealing with COVID-19 response and numerous pressing issues,” and said, “I request a strict investigation from the police and will actively cooperate to ensure a swift and fair investigation.”
Furthermore, he said, “Once the investigation results are out, I will take strict measures and will be more thorough in managing those around me to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” adding, “I will bear an even heavier responsibility so that various pending tasks for the development of Gwangju are not disrupted, and I will fulfill my duties unwaveringly.”
Meanwhile, the day before, the police executed a search warrant at Gwangju City Hall related to current and former secretaries of Mayor Lee Yong-seop, who are suspected of unfairly intervening in the rights to a festival hosted by Gwangju City.
They secured computers and related materials from the Life Agriculture Division and the Secretary’s Office.
Additionally, two individuals, including a company representative suspected of offering money and goods in exchange for business favors, were also booked.
