First Look at New Sportage Interior and Exterior... Design-Focused 'Gravity' Model Also Revealed
First Subcompact SUV to Feature 'Panoramic Curved Display'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Kia unveiled the interior and exterior of the 5th generation Sportage, a compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) model, on the 8th. Notably, this time, the 'Gravity' model, which differentiates the design of the Sportage, was also introduced for the first time.
The Sportage is one of Kia's representative long-lasting and best-selling models. Since its first launch in 1993, it has undergone five complete redesigns over 28 years and sold 6.14 million units globally. It is the highest-selling model in Kia's history.
The newly revealed Sportage is a completely redesigned model released after six years since the 2015 launch. Kia realized its new brand direction, 'Movement that inspires,' by providing a futuristic design and interior space that surpasses its class in the new Sportage.
Kia especially applied its new design philosophy, 'Opposites United,' to the new Sportage, incorporating bold and challenging design elements based on the dynamic sensibility of nature. The front of the vehicle features a tiger nose radiator grille with a black technical pattern connected to sleek LED headlamps, creating a futuristic image.
The rear presents a sporty and wide shoulder with a horizontally connected garnish and sharp rear lamps, producing a simple and stable image. Additionally, a large black rear bumper with a unique skid plate was applied to establish unity with the front part.
Kia also unveiled the Gravity, a design-differentiated model of the new Sportage. The Gravity creates a strong impression through a voluminous radiator grille, more robust front and rear bumpers, glossy black door garnishes, and elevated roof racks.
The interior incorporates cutting-edge features and unique design elements. The new Sportage is the first compact SUV in Korea to apply a 'Panoramic Curved Display,' which connects a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system screen in a curved form. The Panoramic Curved Display reduces screen distortion according to viewing angles, minimizing driver distraction.
Furthermore, a touch-type control switch that integrates infotainment and climate control functions was applied, reducing the switch space in the center of the interior and creating an innovative image similar to the latest electronic devices. Additionally, a dial-type electronic shift-by-wire (SBW) transmission was installed, and the console position was raised to enhance usability while adding advanced and premium feel.
The visibility area is also excellent. The side mirror's junction was moved from the A-pillar to the door, and the instrument cluster was lowered by 30 mm to expand the driver's field of view and provide a superior sense of openness.
