Jungnang-gu 'Stray Cat Feeding Station' Operation
9 New Public Feeding Stations for Stray Cats Installed in Community Centers and Neighborhood Parks, Total 17 Operated... Dedicated Volunteers Assigned for Food Distribution, Hygiene Management, and Population Control through Neutering
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has newly installed a total of nine "Our Neighborhood Cat Feeding Stations" this year to alleviate residents' inconveniences caused by stray cats.
The installation locations include six community centers in Myeonmokbon-dong, Myeonmok 3·8-dong, Mangwoo 3-dong, and three neighborhood parks: Bongsudae Park, Yongma Waterfall Park, and Sagajeong Park.
Including the eight stations established in 2019, a total of 17 stations are now in operation this year. Management is handled by the animal protection group "Jungnang-gu Stray Cat Friends." Each feeding station is staffed by one volunteer who supplies food and water and regularly maintains cleanliness around the area.
The cat feeding stations not only provide a safe and hygienic environment for stray cats but also effectively resolve conflicts among residents. By providing stable food sources, they prevent cats from tearing open food waste bags or damaging facilities around residential areas, which is expected to significantly reduce residents' complaints.
Management of the stray cat population will also be smoother. The district plans to continuously conduct neutering projects by capturing stray cats around the feeding stations to maintain an appropriate population of the highly reproductive stray cats.
Since the 7th local government administration, the district has improved awareness of animal welfare and established a foundation for pet culture by creating an Animal Welfare Team and enacting ordinances to promote animal welfare and a culture of respect for life.
Additionally, efforts are being made for animal welfare through various projects such as supporting the adoption of abandoned animals, operating emergency medical hospitals, and providing behavioral correction for companion dogs.
