The Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car, set to open at the end of August, will operate over the Uldolmok Strait, the site of Admiral Yi Sun-sin's decisive victory in the Battle of Myeongnyang, which was a turning point in ending the Imjin War.
Along with the emotional experience of the historic site of the Battle of Myeongnyang, the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car offers the fastest water currents in Korea (up to 13 knots, about 23 km/h) and the chance to enjoy the mysterious and massive whirlpool sea simultaneously. The final construction phase is currently underway.
In June, the installation of the main wire rope, a key process in cable car construction, began, and by the end of August, visitors will be able to admire the Uldolmok sea of the Battle of Myeongnyang from directly above.
The cable car installation involves the critical process of installing wire ropes, which includes a main rope with a thickness of 58 mm and five auxiliary ropes of 28 mm, 18 mm, and others, all woven together, a process directly linked to safety.
To achieve this, the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car project has created a significant impact in the cable car industry by using drones for the first time in Korea to lay the auxiliary wire ropes.
The manufacturer of the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car, Doppelmayr, an Austrian company with a 100-year tradition leading the global cable car market, has reportedly dispatched top engineers equipped with the latest technology and expertise, considering the historical significance of Uldolmok, the complexity of the work, and safety.
A representative of the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car said, “The Myeongnyang Battle Festival, held for three days from September 3 to 5, will become even more vibrant with the opening of the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car at the end of August. We will offer the moving experience of the Battle of Myeongnyang and the whirlpool sea of Uldolmok from the sky.”
Once the Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car opens, Haenam’s Useong Tourist Site, Jindo’s Nokjin Tourist Complex, the Jindo Bridge connecting Haenam and Jindo, and the marine cable car will harmonize to provide an impressive historical experience and beautiful scenery for healing. It is expected to become a popular destination not only for family trips with children but also for friends and couples.
