Jungnang-gu Tax Officer Gains Attention for Recovering 18 Million Won in 'Dormant Deposit' Funds
Finding Unpaid Court Deposits for Jungnang-gu Local Tax Delinquents to Collect Delinquent Local Taxes... Active Administration for Residents Finds Way to Receive 18 Million Won in Expired Deposits... Remaining Delinquent Taxes Returned to Delinquents, Achieving Two Goals
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “Visiting the district office for delinquency consultation was the best decision of my life. I am truly grateful to the officer who worked hard as if it were her own matter.”
Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) announced that thanks to the efforts of a tax official, 18 million won in dormant court deposit funds were recovered from a delinquent taxpayer, enabling the payment of overdue local taxes.
In May, Mr. A, who was struggling to pay overdue local taxes with his current income, visited the district office seeking a solution. After a long consultation with the responsible staff, there was no sharp solution under current laws, so they agreed to reduce the delinquent amount little by little each month and Mr. A had to leave.
The staff member, concerned about Mr. A’s difficult situation, searched for a solution and discovered that there was an unclaimed court deposit fund for Mr. A. They immediately inquired with the court about the possibility of payment, but were told that payment was impossible because the statute of limitations had expired after 10 years since the deposit.
However, the staff did not give up and continued to consider the matter. While carefully reviewing relevant regulations and Mr. A’s deposit details, they finally found a solution.
If part of the deposit is paid within 10 years after the deposit, the statute of limitations is suspended, and since there was a payment history for Mr. A’s deposit, this regulation applied.
By asserting the suspension of the statute of limitations due to payment to the court, this was accepted, and Mr. A was finally able to receive 18 million won in deposit funds. The deposit funds will first be used to pay the overdue local taxes, and the remaining amount will be returned to Mr. A.
