[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Chunsu] Jeonnam Damyang-gun announced on the 2nd that a "100th Anniversary Commemorative Invitational Photo Exhibition of Korean Immigrants in Cuba" will be held under the theme "Damyang, Tracing the Forgotten Student Independence Activists" at Damju Damidam Art District, a newly renovated cultural complex space.
This photo exhibition is jointly hosted by the Chuseong Culture and Arts Foundation, Jeonnam National University Peace and Unification Diplomacy Center, Dongshin University Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Gwangju University Multicultural Research Institute, and Chosun University International Culture Research Institute, with support from Damyang-gun. It can be viewed at the gallery building in Damju Damidam Art District.
The exhibition will be held from the 4th to the 7th around the 66th Memorial Day and displays photographic materials related to the support for the March 1st Movement in 1919, the 1929 Gwangju Student Independence Movement support rally and special fundraising, funds for the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, Korean National Association population tax, diplomatic expenses, and expenses for the Liberation Army.
Moreover, it captures the faded photographs of life in Cuba, which has been a strong shelter for the diaspora without a country for 100 years.
Also, the letter from Baekbeom Kim Gu regarding the Gwangju Student Independence Movement, published in the May 1, 1930 issue of Shinhan Minbo, can be seen in calligraphy by teacher Sohyeon Yubongja.
In addition, among the student independence activists from Damyang who participated in the 1929 Gwangju Student Independence Movement and were expelled or imprisoned, 10 have been officially honored, but the exhibition also includes records of many student independence activists who remain unrecognized, adding significance to the event.
Furthermore, a variety of events such as the Hunda Festival, musical performances, memorial performances, talk concerts, and the film "Nameless Stars" are also prepared.
