POSCO Supplies Largest Ever Construction Steel Plates for New Taiwan Project
Supply of 70,000 Tons of Heavy Plates for New Structure of Taiwan's Largest International Airport Terminal 3
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] POSCO has succeeded in securing the largest-ever supply contract for construction steel plates in two years.
On the 2nd, POSCO announced that it will supply all 70,000 tons of construction steel plates required for the construction of the third terminal at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, which is being built by Samsung C&T (Construction). This is the largest single project since POSCO supplied 120,000 tons of construction steel plates for the ?anakkale Bridge in Turkey in 2020.
This project involves adding a third terminal to Taiwan’s largest airport, Taoyuan International Airport, to accommodate the increasing demand for airport usage. It is a large-scale project with a total budget of 1.8 trillion KRW. Construction began this year and is scheduled for completion in 2025, with an expected annual capacity of 65 million passengers.
POSCO supported the successful bid for this project based on its ongoing partnership with Samsung C&T since 2015. By sharing project information in advance, POSCO provided steel utilization technologies that meet engineering standards and calculated the optimal quantity to propose a stable supply aligned with the project schedule.
In Taiwan, where earthquakes frequently occur, all building structures must mandatorily incorporate seismic design, and the steel products used must be seismic-grade steel. More than 90% of the products supplied by POSCO for this project are seismic steel plates that absorb maximum vibrations during earthquakes to prevent structural deformation. These products are POSCO’s high value-added WTP (World Top Premium) products.
Meanwhile, this project is also recognized as a case of practicing 'Together With POSCO,' where steel structures using POSCO’s steel plates are manufactured by domestic small and medium-sized enterprises and supplied locally, promoting mutual growth with business partners.
