Lotte Hotel Announces ESG Management Vision "Declaration of Low-Carbon Management for Sustainable Growth"
Taking Steps to Reduce Carbon Footprint by Introducing Reusable Dispensers Replacing Single-Use Products and Outdoor Chilled Water Cooling Systems
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] Lotte Hotel announced on the 2nd that it has declared the first year of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management and unveiled its ESG management vision. Through the proclamation of the ESG management vision, the company explained that despite the crisis spreading throughout the hotel industry due to COVID-19, it is reflecting on corporate sustainability and making necessary changes.
Lotte Hotel stated, "We launched a dedicated ESG organization earlier this year to establish a full-fledged ESG management system," and added, "We have formed a company-wide ESG committee to promote operational policies for sustainable development, including ▲expansion of eco-friendly facilities ▲green office ▲co-prosperity with small businesses and social ventures ▲expansion of community contributions ▲transparent disclosure of ESG information ▲and ESG behavioral guidelines for employees."
Kim Hyun-sik, CEO of Lotte Hotel, declared the new ESG management slogan 'GREEN STAY without a single use,' emphasizing a vision focused on reducing the carbon footprint (the total greenhouse gas emissions produced from manufacturing to the consumer's hands) by cutting down on single-use products.
Accordingly, in June, L7 Hotel and Lotte City Hotel will replace the existing single-use plastic containers used for amenities with newly produced large-capacity, reusable dispensers to reduce plastic waste. This is a proactive measure ahead of the Ministry of Environment’s recommendation scheduled for next year to stop providing free single-use plastic containers in lodging facilities with 50 or more rooms. Each hotel plans to sequentially adopt the new dispensers after exhausting the stock of existing single-use amenities.
Lotte Hotel explained, "The new dispensers use 'non-refillable containers' that cannot be opened, completely blocking foreign substance intrusion, and have established a stricter room maintenance process to overcome hygiene concerns, which have been pointed out as a drawback of large-capacity dispensers."
Before the final renovation scheduled for the first half of next year, Lotte Hotel World, which completed its first phase of renovation on the 1st and returned with a new look, decided to improve energy efficiency by introducing an outdoor chilled water cooling system.
During the winter season, instead of operating the chiller, the system uses cold external air to cool the chilled water fed into the hotel’s piping for cooling, saving over 100,000 kWh of electricity annually. Lotte Hotel plans to actively expand the introduction of outdoor cooling systems to its chain hotels to save energy. The hotel stated, "We will solidify the foundation of ESG management by reducing direct and indirect carbon emissions generated throughout corporate activities, including product and service production and employee activities."
CEO Kim said, "We will establish the foundation for sustainable growth through Lotte Hotel’s unique ESG management," and added, "We will transform into a hotel that provides the best products and services to customers based on low carbon."
