Japan's Toyota and Honda Halt Production in Malaysia Due to Lockdown Order
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda have temporarily halted vehicle production in Malaysia, where a nationwide lockdown has been imposed due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.
According to Kyodo News on the 1st, Toyota announced that it has decided to suspend automobile production and sales in Malaysia from that day until the 14th. Toyota has not yet determined when production will resume.
Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota, also decided to halt production at its local plant, which produced 220,000 compact cars last year, until the 14th.
Honda also announced that it will suspend operations at its motorcycle and automobile production plants until the 14th, and expects to resume normal operations from the 15th.
Toyota has two factories in Selangor, Malaysia, and produced 50,000 passenger and commercial vehicles last year.
Honda also produces 300,000 motorcycles and 100,000 automobiles annually at its two local plants.
