Access to Electric Vehicles Restricted in Andong Hahoe Village
Establishment and Implementation of Preservation Management Measures to Prevent Repeated Electric Train Accidents
The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 1st that it will establish and implement preservation and management measures to prevent electric cart accidents occurring in Andong Hahoe Village, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It judged that if houses and other structures continue to be damaged, it could negatively impact the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV), which refers to the cultural and natural significance important to all humanity. It also saw that the deterioration of settlement conditions could lead to difficulties in maintaining the World Heritage status.
The Cultural Heritage Administration will work with local governments to devise and implement various measures. Temporary barriers restricting electric cart access within Hahoe Village will be installed, and patrols by cultural heritage safety personnel within the village will be strengthened. Additionally, a vehicle control system will be installed within the year to limit indiscriminate electric cart operations. An official stated, "This will help prevent direct damage to cultural heritage and alleviate inconveniences for village residents."
In the mid to long term, a World Heritage implementation plan will be established and executed in accordance with the "Special Act on the Preservation, Management, and Utilization of World Heritage." Furthermore, the preservation and management status of the heritage will be regularly inspected annually, and immediate follow-up actions will be taken if any issues arise.
