View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] With the finalists for the People Power Party (PPP) leadership race confirmed, there is an assessment that the bold challenges by first-term lawmakers, regardless of whether they passed the cutoff, have led to increased interest in the opposition party. Following Rep. Kim Woong, Rep. Kim Eun-hye and former Future United Party Supreme Council member Lee Jun-seok joined in, and the surge of 'new challengers' not only changed the opposition party leadership structure centered on existing factions and senior members but also laid the foundation for the party convention's success.
Rep. Kim Woong officially announced his candidacy for party leader on the 13th, becoming the first among first-term lawmakers to do so. He stated, "I will become the locomotive driving the party's change," adding, "The very fact that a first-term lawmaker is running for party leader symbolizes the party's change." At that time, Rep. Kim emphasized that to bring about change in the party, not only he but other first-term lawmakers must step forward together.
Indeed, challenges from first-term lawmakers followed his announcement. On the 14th, Rep. Kim Eun-hye declared her candidacy for party leader, emphasizing change by saying, "We must replace the leadership with completely new faces so that the people can truly feel the change in the People Power Party." Former Supreme Council member Lee Jun-seok also officially announced his candidacy on the 20th, expressing his ambition: "If the younger generation gains confidence that they can be the main force of our party, we will be overwhelmed with talented individuals and shout with happiness."
Moreover, first-term lawmakers Bae Hyun-jin, Lee Young, Lee Yong, and Cho Soo-jin also entered the race for Supreme Council member, expanding the competition. Subsequently, the party convention was reorganized into a contest between first-term and senior lawmakers, leading from the 'first-term whirlwind' to the 'Lee Jun-seok phenomenon.'
The first-term whirlwind is not simply due to the emergence of new figures. Experts say it reflects the accumulated public desire for political reform, which has materialized as support for these individuals. Professor Shin Yul of Myongji University’s Department of Political Science and Diplomacy commented, "It is not because of the individual Lee Jun-seok, but it has significance as the success of young politicians. Even if it had been Rep. Kim Woong or Rep. Kim Eun-hye, the same effect would have occurred," diagnosing that "it reflects the public's belief that the People Power Party must change."
There is also analysis that this could spark interest in the opposition party through the presidential election phase following the party convention. Political commentator Lee Jong-hoon predicted, "The success of former Supreme Council member Lee Jun-seok carries great symbolism of change, so not only will the People Power Party’s party support rate rise, but the next opposition presidential candidates will also attract attention."
