Hong Junpyo: "Party Leadership Election Likely to Be Those Who Left vs. Those Who Stayed... Last Election Ended in Victory for Those Who Stayed"
[Asia Economy, reporter Kang Juhui] Independent lawmaker Hong Junpyo predicted that the preliminary race for the People Power Party leadership is likely to develop into a confrontation between those who left the party and those who remained.
On May 28, Hong wrote on his Facebook page, "There was a lot of talk during the last floor leader election, but in the end, I saw it as a contest between those who left and those who stayed. Ultimately, the flow among lawmakers ended in victory for those who remained," he said, offering this analysis.
The terms "those who left" and "those who remained" refer to politicians who either left or stayed in the Saenuri Party (now the People Power Party) during the impeachment crisis of former President Park Geunhye in 2017.
"Those who left" refers to figures such as former lawmaker Yoo Seungmin and others who founded the Bareun Party. Among the candidates who passed the preliminary race for the People Power Party leadership, former Supreme Council member Lee Junseok, former floor leader Joo Hoeyoung, and lawmaker Hong Moonpyo all have experience with the Bareun Party.
Previously, in the preliminary race for the People Power Party leadership, former lawmaker Na Kyungwon, former Supreme Council member Lee Junseok, and lawmakers Cho Kyungtae, Joo Hoeyoung, and Hong Moonpyo were selected as the final candidates for the main race.
Hong's remarks suggest that although former Supreme Council member Lee Junseok is performing well in the current leadership race, he expects that, in the end, lawmakers who remained in the party will prevail.

Hong added, "The next leadership must put this invisible confrontation into a melting pot and pursue a policy of great unity. We must first achieve true harmony among ourselves, which will strengthen the party and make it easier to merge with others and recruit outside figures. We should not be bound by minor interests but focus on the greater cause," he emphasized.
