Yeo "Haejin Gong employees earn hundreds of millions using internal information... Public officials' related industry stocks must be investigated"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] In relation to the confirmation through an internal audit that an employee of the Korea Ocean Business Corporation under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries used insider information for personal gain, the People Power Party has demanded an investigation into whether public officials across all ministries have invested in related industries.
On the 28th, Ahn Byung-gil, spokesperson for the People Power Party, stated, "An employee of the Korea Ocean Business Corporation under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries used non-public insider information to purchase a large amount of HMM stocks and earned nearly 160 million KRW in profits, and it was revealed by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries audit that his wife also holds stocks worth 280 million KRW," adding, "The Korea Ocean Business Corporation was established to rebuild the shipping industry, which fell into crisis after the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping. How can the public accept that an institution that should be making every effort to revive the Korean shipping industry abused insider information for personal gain?"
Spokesperson Ahn criticized, "The employee denied using non-public information and claimed to have invested based on generally available information, but considering that he has been exclusively in charge of HMM-related work since joining, his credibility is low," and added, "Since the current administration took office, scandals involving public officials such as the LH incident and controversies over special supply for public officials have been continuous. This is evidence that discipline in the public sector has seriously deteriorated."
He emphasized, "There is a saying in the Mokminsimseo that 'Integrity is the fundamental duty of a local official, the source of all goodness, and the foundation of virtue,'" and stressed, "It must be remembered that no government policy can succeed without establishing public official discipline."

Spokesperson Ahn said, "The police must conduct a strict investigation into this case, and the Korea Ocean Business Corporation must also take appropriate disciplinary action against the employee," and urged, "The government and ruling party should conduct a full investigation of stock holdings in related industries by public officials across all ministries and disclose the results to the public."
