On the 26th (local time), local media including NBC reported that at around 6:30 a.m., Samuel Cassidy (57), a technical staff member, opened fire at the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail maintenance yard in downtown San Jose, California, killing 9 people.
Initially, the death toll was reported as 8, but it rose to 9 after one critically injured person who was transported to the hospital died. All victims were known to be VTA employees.
The shooting occurred during a shift change when the facility was crowded. The victims were shot in two buildings within the VTA facility used as the light rail operations control center and the light rail parking lot and maintenance yard. Cassidy reportedly took his own life when police arrived at the scene. The motive behind Cassidy’s crime has not yet been disclosed.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said, "It is a terrible day for our city," adding, "(The victims) came to work every day as essential workers despite health risks." California Governor Gavin Newsom praised the authorities' swift response but also lamented, "What is our problem? When will we be able to solve this (shooting incident)?"
