Eunpyeong Green MoaMoa Character Design Contest
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) is holding the "2021 Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa Character Design Contest" from May 24 to June 18 under the theme of Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa, accepting applications and submissions.
This contest, open to anyone nationwide aged 19 and older, invites participants to design a character that embodies the image of proper waste separation and resource circulation. Through this, participants will have an opportunity to reflect on the benefits and significance of waste separation. The selected character designs will be used for the production of the Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa BI and to promote proper waste separation and Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa.
The contest theme is a character that effectively conveys the symbolism and identity of "Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa," operated by Eunpyeong-gu.
Anyone nationwide can participate by downloading the contest application form from the Eunpyeong-gu website’s public notices and submitting their works via email.
Submitted works will be selected through a two-stage evaluation including an online preference survey among residents, awarding up to 10 winners: ▲Grand Prize (2 million KRW) 1 person ▲Excellence Prize (500,000 KRW) 4 persons ▲Encouragement Prize (200,000 KRW) 5 persons, with prize money awarded accordingly.
Eunpyeong-gu has emphasized that promoting resource circulation is a key strategy of the Green New Deal, enabling sustainable development and a carbon-neutral economy. The Eunpyeong-type Green New Deal, which promotes resource circulation through improving the recycling separation system, is precisely the Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa.
The mixed disposal method of recyclables in single-family housing areas incurred high sorting costs and caused problems such as contamination from food waste, reducing the value of recyclables.
In Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa, with residents’ consent, residents separate and dispose of recyclables into eight categories, including transparent PET bottles, at 10 to 20 designated collection points in each village on specified days and times.
By emptying, rinsing, separating, and disposing cleanly without mixing, the value of recyclables is increased, and they are sold immediately without separate sorting after collection, reducing processing costs.
Using portable recycling bins that are easy to install and dismantle overcomes space constraints for collection. After operation, the bins are removed to prevent environmental pollution caused by illegal dumping.

Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, stated, “The works selected in this contest will be used as characters to promote Eunpyeong Green Moa Moa and proper waste separation methods and their value.” She added, “It is important to overcome the environmental crisis caused by indiscriminate disposal of plastics and other recyclables during COVID-19 through small daily practices like proper waste separation. We look forward to many participants joining us to spread this value together.”
