Environmental Improvement Works Highlighting Local Characteristics to Revitalize the Regional Economy
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) announced that it will officially begin the environmental improvement construction project in June to create specialized food alley streets around Sagajeong Station and Sangbong-dong.
Both areas are representative commercial districts in the district with high foot traffic near subway stations, where residents have long demanded environmental improvements due to illegal parking, narrow roads, and outdated facilities.
Accordingly, the district designated the specialized street creation project as a key pledge of the 7th local government administration and has been meticulously preparing from the basic concept to the detailed design stage since 2018 by gathering opinions through a project promotion council composed of nearby merchants and residents.
First, the 210-meter food alley near exits 1 and 2 of Sagajeong Station on Subway Line 7 will be transformed into the ‘Sagajeong 51-gil Specialized Street.’ Uncomfortable street facilities and sidewalks will be replaced, and the environment will be improved through underground wiring and the creation of an open plaza to revitalize the deteriorated area.
In particular, near exit 1 of Sagajeong Station, a community vitality center including a shared childcare room and shared kitchen will be established to provide a comfortable space for anyone passing by to visit.
The district plans to hold ‘Jungnang Masil’ at this location on the 8th to explain the progress of the specialized street project to residents and gather opinions on future activation plans. ‘Jungnang Masil’ is a meeting where the mayor visits the site to communicate with local residents, and this will be the 73rd session.
The ‘Sangbong-dong Food Alley’ will also undergo transformation. The Sangbong-dong Food Alley is a total 680-meter-long street including Bongujae-ro 33-gil near Sangbong Station, where the sidewalk width will be expanded and pedestrian-priority roads will be created to provide a pleasant walking environment. Symbolic sculptures and nighttime lighting will also enhance the street’s aesthetics.
Both locations are expected to complete construction by the end of this year and present a new appearance to residents.
Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi said, “Thanks to the active cooperation of store owners and local residents, we are finally able to start construction,” adding, “Since these two places are representative commercial areas of the district, we will create spaces that reflect the unique characteristics of each area and strive to revitalize the stagnant local economy.”
Meanwhile, the area around Taereung Market, located between Jungnang Station and Junghwa Station, is also being transformed into a clean street. The district is currently conducting facility maintenance, underground wiring, and road and sidewalk paving for 108 street vendors along a total 630-meter stretch.
