Songpa-gu Holds 'Carbon Neutrality Pledge Ceremony'
On the 31st, Songpa District Residents' Pledge Ceremony "Carbon Neutrality, Songpa Goes Green" Event Held... District Mayor, Council Chair, Education Director, Housewives' Environmental Council, Life Environment Practice Group, and Blue Environment Movement Headquarters Members Attend
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) announced on the 27th that it will hold the Songpa Residents' Pledge Ceremony, "Carbon Neutrality, Songpa Goes Green," the first event among Seoul's autonomous districts to pledge carbon neutrality to its residents.
To commemorate the 26th Environment Day, the district organized the "Carbon Neutrality, Songpa Goes Green" event to raise awareness of the importance of carbon neutrality and to strengthen community solidarity toward realizing a carbon-neutral Songpa city by 2050.
The event, held at 3 p.m. on the 31st at the Songpa Book Museum Eoullim Hall, will feature five representatives from various fields reading the pledge: Songpa-gu Mayor Park Seong-su, Songpa District Council Chair Lee Hwang-su, Gangdong Songpa Education Support Office Director Park Eun-kyung, Green Songpa Committee Chair Jeon Ui-chan, and Songpa Housewives Environmental Council Chair Park Young-sook.
Additionally, members and executives from the district’s representative environmental organizations, including the Songpa Life Environment Practice Group, Blue Environment Movement Headquarters, and Soli Nature Love, will attend.
During the event, an environmental performance will take place. A 65cm diameter bomb-shaped sculpture symbolizing "carbon" will be smashed with a hammer and nails to reaffirm the commitment to carbon neutrality.
The entire event will be broadcast live on YouTube via Songpa TV.
Furthermore, the district will accelerate its carbon neutrality policies starting with this pledge ceremony. In August, it plans to hold the "2021 First Half Carbon Neutral City Plan Implementation Report TF Meeting" to review and supplement greenhouse gas reduction progress.
On September 7, a talk concert themed "Carbon Neutrality" will be held to raise awareness among residents about the severity of the climate crisis and improve understanding of carbon neutrality. In the second half of the year, a carbon neutrality symposium featuring external environmental experts is also scheduled.
Mayor Park Seong-su of Songpa-gu stated, "To walk the difficult path of carbon neutrality, it is time for not only local governments but also civic groups, academia, and residents to unite as one community." He added, "With this pledge ceremony as a starting point, we will protect the lives and property of residents from the increasingly serious climate crisis and prepare for a healthy future for Songpa."

Meanwhile, last September, the district established the "Songpa-type Green New Deal Carbon Neutral City Plan," the first among Seoul’s autonomous districts, aiming to reduce Songpa-gu’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. It is currently implementing 40 detailed projects across six major sectors: buildings, transportation, waste, public sector, green infrastructure, and external cooperation. Various efforts are underway, including operating a carbon neutrality TF, hosting environmental expert symposiums, and conducting research projects every three years.
