Minister of Oceans and Fisheries: "Actively Participating in Discussions on International Regulation of Marine Litter"
Encouragement for the Launch of the P4G Marine Special Session 'New Southern Sea Community'
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Moon Seong-hyeok, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, stated on the 26th at the P4G (Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030) Summit's special ocean session, "We support the movement to internationalize regulations on marine litter and will actively participate in related international discussions."
Minister Moon made these remarks during an encouragement speech at the launch ceremony of the 'New Southern Sea Community Initiative,' held as part of the P4G ocean special session at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul that afternoon.
He emphasized, "The government will continue to strengthen solidarity with the 'Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia' (PEMSEA), P4G member countries, and P4G partnerships to address the marine plastic issue."
He added, "We hope that the New Southern Sea Community, which promotes the participation and capacity building of civil society for marine litter management in the East Asian region, will serve as an important stepping stone."
Minister Moon also shared plans to host the '7th International Marine Debris Conference' in Busan next September in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme, asking for "much interest and participation."

The New Southern Sea Community Initiative is a project led by civil society organizations from New Southern countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia to manage marine litter. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries sponsors this project together with PEMSEA, a UN regional cooperation organization.
