Domestic Population Movement in April Down 3.4%... Declines for Four Consecutive Months
Statistics Korea Announces 'April Domestic Population Movement Statistics'... Seoul Experiences Net Population Outflow for 14 Consecutive Months
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Last month, domestic population movement in South Korea decreased compared to April of the previous year. After a year-long upward trend last year, it shifted to a downward trend this year, and in the case of Seoul, the population has been declining for 14 consecutive months.
According to the 'April 2021 Domestic Population Movement Statistics' released by Statistics Korea on the 28th, the number of movers last month was 593,000, a 3.4% decrease compared to the same quarter last year.
The population movement rate, which refers to the number of movers per 100 people, was 14.1%, down 0.5 percentage points. Among total movers, 67.4% moved within the same city or province, while 32.6% moved between cities or provinces.
This year, the number of movers has shown a decreasing trend. The number of movers turned to a decrease in January (-2.2%), followed by February (-9.6%), March (-4.0%), and April (-3.4%), showing a decline for four consecutive months. From February (11.1%) to December (11.1%) last year, except for May (-0.0%), the trend was steadily increasing before switching to a decrease.
By city and province, eight regions including Gyeonggi (12,600 people), Chungnam (1,180 people), and Gyeongbuk (1,133 people) experienced net population inflow, while nine regions including Seoul (-9,738 people), Daegu (-2,291 people), and Busan (-2,085 people) experienced net outflow.

Seoul has seen population outflow for 14 months since March last year. The net outflow last month was larger than in March (-6,216 people).
