On this day, the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee held the 2nd meeting of the 1st Subcommittee on Bill Examination and conducted a public hearing on the "Partial Amendment to the Medical Service Act Related to the Installation of Video Information Processing Devices in Operating Rooms."
The bill to install CCTV in operating rooms was proposed to prevent illegal medical practices such as proxy surgeries and sexual crimes. Considering that related bills were proposed in the 19th and 20th National Assemblies but were not reviewed and were discarded, the 21st National Assembly is now putting more effort into it.
At the public hearing, Kim Jong-min, Insurance Director of the Korean Medical Association, who attended as a witness, argued against the installation citing patient human rights violations due to body exposure and issues with video data management. On the other hand, Lee Na-geum, Director of the Patient Rights Research Institute, expressed support, citing that operating rooms remain blind spots for crime surveillance and that insider whistleblowing is almost impossible. Lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties plan to hold a bill subcommittee meeting for further discussion after the public hearing.
