Gangnam-gu Mayor Jeong Soon-gyun 'Welcomes' Inclusion of Wirye Gwacheon Line in Railway Network Plan

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jung Soon-gyun, Mayor of Gangnam District, expressed his welcome on the 25th, saying, "The government's inclusion of the Wirye-Gwacheon Line (Segok Circulation Line) project in the 4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan is a correct decision reflecting the long-standing wishes and aspirations of Gangnam residents."
The Korea Transport Institute, a national research institute, announced on the 22nd of last month that it will establish the light rail Wirye-Gwacheon Line connecting the Government Gwacheon Complex and Songpa Bokjeong in Seoul.
This was announced at a public hearing on the research results for the nationwide mid- to long-term railroad network construction from 2021 to 2030.
The total project cost for the 22.9 km Wirye-Gwacheon Line, connecting downtown Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, is 1.699 trillion KRW. This line will be linked with the Shinbundang Line, Suin-Bundang Line, and Seoul Subway Lines 3 and 4. If constructed as planned, it is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in Segok-dong and the Suseo Station public housing district, where a large population influx is anticipated due to the public housing development project.
During the 7th term of the elected government, Gangnam District focused on behind-the-scenes efforts to expedite the construction of the Wirye-Gwacheon Line, which was set as a core pledge. Recognizing the need to expand transportation infrastructure in the southeastern region, Mayor Jung has repeatedly urged the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Seoul Metropolitan Government since his inauguration.

Mayor Jung Soon-gyun said, "This achievement was made possible thanks to the united efforts of all 570,000 Gangnam residents, and I expect it to be definitely reflected in the final plan to be announced in June." He added, "I also hope that the GTX-D Line (Southern Metropolitan Express Railroad), the relocation of the Suseo train depot, and the extension of Line 3 to the southern Gyeonggi area will be promptly advanced."
